The Words of Eternal Life

The example of a metaphor being represented physically does not happen anywhere else. It is not like Jesus walked to the door and say that I am the door.

Justin Martyr said that the communion bread and wine transforms into the body and blood.

And this food is called among us Eucharistia [the Eucharist], of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined.
For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.

Purgatory #

Lets first start by defining purgatory. 1030

1030 All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.606 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.

1032 This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: “Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.” From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance under taken on behalf of the dead:

Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers

This suggests that whoever seeks the kingdom of God gets the reward of eternal life.

Trial and Temptation

The Judgment of the Nations

Matthew 25:31-46 (NRSV)

In this parable there are two groups of people. They are separated based upon whether or not they did the will of the father. To the group that did the will of the father he gave them eternal life. To those who did not do the will of the father they did not inherit heaven, but hell with the devil and his angles.

The Laborers in the Vineyard

Faith alone #

defining faith alone and arguing there being a need or use for works of charity seems to be largely unsupported by the Bible. There is a requirement for works in the ultimate justification. Wether that is works derived from faith therefor there is no real reason to think about works or if works are a part of the needed things to think about for full justification on judgment day. Martin Luther concluded that was not needed at all and that faith is all that is needed. When asked about James 2:24 that opposes sola fide, he said that the book of James is not needed in the Bible.

The Futility of Seeking Wisdom
